Charlotte County Veterans Fear Loss of Care Facility
Southwest Florida veterans are voicing concerns over the planned relocation of their outpatient facility. The Port Charlotte Outpatient Care Facility is set to move to a larger location in North Port by 2027.
Veterans in Charlotte County worry about the impact of losing their local facility. The Disabled American Veterans organization assists up to 500 veterans monthly, helping with appointments and benefits. They fear the move could leave many veterans feeling forgotten.
"We'll have any era from Vietnam era to the Gulf War, Afghanistan," said one veteran, highlighting the diverse group they serve.
The Port Charlotte facility, located off US-41, is the only VA clinic in Charlotte County and the closest one for DeSoto County residents. Veterans stress the importance of keeping the facility accessible.
"I've been a disabled veteran since 1997. I transferred here three years ago, and this is where I get all my health care from, excellent facility," said another veteran.
The VA confirmed that the plan for the new, larger facility has been in development since 2020. However, concerns persist, especially for veterans who cannot drive and rely on public transportation, which currently does not cross county lines.
"We have some of the poorest veterans here, and I know that's sad to say, but even DeSoto County is the same way," said a concerned veteran. "You're taking away the revenue that's brought into this community. By removing this, you're taking away from local employment."
The Disabled American Veterans group is seeking transparency in the decision-making process. "We understand this clinic is too small for this area, but there were no conversations. Who's made these decisions? Was it a bid process? The county commission?" asked a veteran.
As the situation unfolds, the Charlotte County outpatient clinic remains open for now.
